Born from the meeting of French choreographer Yvann Alexandre and French film director Doria Belanger, Skip stones is a sensory journey in the heart of the dance movement. Nourished by thirty years of creation and the meetings that carried them, mixing repertoire excerpts and danced conversations, the film paints the portrait of a creator (Yvann Alexandre) as well as its artistic community, and the energy that emanates from it. From the banks of the Loire river to the roofs of Tunis, passing through the snow forests of Quebec, it is all about inventing its own space and time, both organic and humanist.
Our theme this year is "REFLECTIONS: a poetic exploration of human emotion, self-discovery, and cinematic nostalgia." How do you think your film relates to this theme?
Through a series of choreographic conversations among natural spaces, the film shows an out-of-time territory, conducive to encounters and collective adventures, in which dance, freeing itself from words and sentences, gives birth to a new language.
What do you hope to communicate with our audience through your work?
I hope to communicate a sense of child like wonder and a longing to create.
Trained in contemporary dance as a dance performer in France (Coline school) and England (London Contemporary Dance School), collaborating, with Ballets C de la B, Mathilde Monnier, Emanuel Gat, Ben Duke and more recently Mélanie Perrier of Compagnie 2 minimum among others, French director Doria Belanger has been developing since a few years personal works which can be showcased as video installations (DONNEZ-MOI UNE MINUTE, JOULE), choreographic pieces (JOULE-IN SITU, NUIT INTÉRIEURE) and dance films (VENT APPARENT, UNE ILE DE DANSE). This path interests her as it enables her to "capture the dance", warding off the ephemeral dimension of the live performance by enriching it with a pictural approach.
